The Lebanese Ophthalmological Society (LOS) was founded in 1968 under the auspices of the Lebanese Order of physicians.

Its main objectives were to promote scientific education and diffusion as well to protect the interest of all Lebanese Ophthalmologists and connect them with other official scientific societies in the world.

The first president founder was professor wafic Sinno and from then, several others have succeeded each one pushing the society towards more challenging causes.

Actually, The Lebanese Ophthalmological Society gathers all ophthalmologists working in Lebanon and outside the country. It organizes a yearly scientific meeting and helps in many different others. It is also a member of the ICO (International Council of Ophthalmology), a founder of the MEACO (Middle East African council of Ophthalmology), a founder of AROM (Arab Regional Ophthalmology meeting) and of the Arab League of Ophthalmic Societies.

One of the main interests of the Lebanese Ophthalmological Society is to supervise and adjust the regulations and laws regarding the eye health care and the practice and safety of eye care and vision.
It is always present in all legislative committees that discuss eye and vision safety in parliament and in WHO forum to enhance 20/20 vision in Lebanon.

Another concern is continuous medical education and accreditation of ophthalmologists to ensure their license validation (with the support of the Lebanese Order Of Physicians).

A recent advance in this respect was the launching of Sub-Specialty Societies to enhance and promote higher scientific levels in these fields:

- Cataract and refractive surgery
- Glaucoma
- Retina
- Pediatric Ophthalmology
- Oculoplastic surgery
